چکیده

Motion of physical objects in the world is, in general, nonrigid. In robotics and computer vision, the motion of nonrigid objects is of growing interest to researchers from a wide spectrum of disciplines. The nonrigid objects being studied may be generally categorized into three groups according to the degree of deformation of body parts: articulated, elastic, and fluid. In articulated motion, individual rigid parts of an object move independently of one another and the motion of the whole object is nonrigid in nature. Elastic motion is nonrigid motion that conforms to a certain degree of continuity or smoothness. Fluid motion violates even the continuity assumption and may involve topological variations and turbulent deformations. This paper presents an overview of existing work on articulated and elastic motion, motivated by problems relating to the motion of the human body and of an animal heart, respectively. We study various approaches for recovering the 3D structure and motion of objects through a sequence of images in a bottom-up fashion, a strategy widely employed by various investigators. These approaches are classified as (1) motion recovery without shape models, and (2) model-based analysis. In the discussion of each algorithm, we also include a description of the complexity of feature and motion constraints, which are highly related to each other. c © 1998 Academic Press

In this article we propose a new method for accurate nonrigid motion analysis when point correspondence data is not available. Nonlinear finite element models are constructed by integrating range data and prior knowledge about an object’s properties. The motion sequence is recovered given an initial alignment of the model with the first frame of the sequence. The main idea of the method is to f...

Grouping of Articulated Objects with Common Axis

We address the problem of nonrigid Structure from Motion (SfM). Several methods have been published recently which try to solve the task of tracking, segmenting, or reconstructing nonrigid 3D objects in motion. Most of these papers focus on deformable objects. We deal with the segmentation of articulated objects, that is, nonrigid objects composed of several moving rigid objects. We consider tw...

Nonrigid Motion Analysis Based on Dynamic Refinement of Finite Element Models

ÐIn this paper, we propose new algorithms for accurate nonrigid motion tracking. Given an initial model representing general knowledge of the object, a set of sparse correspondences, and incomplete or missing information about geometry or material properties, we can recover dense motion vectors using finite element models. The method is based on the iterative analysis of the differences between...

Shape and Nonrigid Motion Estimation Through Physics-Based Synthesis

A physics-based framework for 3-D shape and nonrigid motion estimation for real-time computer vision systems is presented. The framework features dynamic models that incorporate the mechanical principles of rigid and nonrigid bodies into conventional geometric primitives. Through the efficient numerical simulation of Lagrange equations of motion, the models can synthesize physically correct beh...

Articulated and Elastic Non-rigid Motion: A Review

Motion of physical objects is non-rigid, in general. Most researchers have focused on the study of the motion and structure of rigid objects because of its simplicity and elegance. Recently, investigation of non-rigid structure and motion transformation has drawn the attention of researchers from a wide spectrum of disciplines. Since the non-rigid motion class encompasses a huge domain, we rest...
